These were minted for the first Austrian pioneers to trade with the people of Somalia in 1780. When travellers began to arrive in 1781 with newly minter thalers the Somalians refused to recognise the coins as valid and so they continued to be produced with the 1780 marking until their withdrawal. The original coins are of course extremely rare and valuable but this restrike offers a perfectly detailed replica struck from 27gr of solid silver complete with embossing around the coin's edge.
